Eimuntas Nekrošius, Divine Comedy (2012)
“In 2012, Eimuntas Nekrošius (1953-2018) directed two plays based on Dante’s Commedia. The first, entitled Divine Comedy but containing episodes only from Inferno and Purgatorio, premiered at the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre in Vilnius on 26 April 2012, with Rolandas Kazlas as Dante and Ieva Triškauskaitė as Beatrice. A staging of Paradiso followed: first performed at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza as part of the 65° Ciclo di Spettacoli Classici on 21 September 2012, the play received its Lithuanian premiere at the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre on 12 February 2013. Nekrošius’s Inferno-Paradiso (2018) combined the most successful moments of the two plays into a single two-hour performance.” –Aistė Kiltinavičiūtė
The text of the plays is based on Aleksys Churginas’s Lithuanian translation (1968-1971).
