Vincas Kisarauskas, Dante Prints (1960)

“In 1960, Vincas Kisarauskas (1934-1988) produced a series of Dante prints using a variety of techniques (predominantly relief printing on cardboard, but also drypoint and mixed media on paper). In 1961, Kisarauskas created a slightly different version of the 1960 print Dante’s Ship, which became the fourth work in his Classical Cycle (a five-print collection based on the classics of Western literature).

“According to the artist’s daughter Aistė Kisarauskaitė, Kisarauskas was introduced to Dante by the Lithuanian literary critic and art historian Petras Juodelis. For a long time, Kisarauskas’s work remained on the margins of official Soviet art life; its dissemination was severely restricted by censorship. 10 works focusing on episodes of the Commedia and Dante’s relationship with Virgil are currently held at the Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis National Museum of Art. They have now been digitised and are available to view online.”  –Aistė Kiltinavičiūtė
